The complete guide
Getting the most life out of your WeeKett filter
A filter rated for 3 to 6 months has real range in that number, and how you use and maintain your WeeKett composter has a genuine effect on where in that range you land.
What actually shortens filter life
Filter life is driven primarily by two things: how often you run the composter, and what you're putting in it. Daily cycles wear a filter faster than running it every two or three days, simply through more total exposure to the odour compounds it's absorbing. Heavier, more pungent loads — particularly anything with strong-smelling components like onion, garlic or fish scraps — place more demand on the filter per cycle than a load of mild vegetable peelings.
Getting toward the 6-month end of the range
If you want to stretch filter life toward the longer end of WeeKett's rated window, a few habits help: run the Quick mode for routine daily processing rather than defaulting to longer cycles unnecessarily, since longer cycles generally mean more sustained odour exposure for the filter to handle. Emptying and rinsing the bucket promptly after each cycle, rather than letting processed material sit, also reduces the residual odour load the filter has to manage between cycles.
Recognising when it's genuinely due for replacement
Rather than watching the calendar strictly, pay attention to whether odour starts creeping back during cycles that previously ran clean — that's the clearest sign the carbon has reached its absorption capacity, regardless of exactly how many weeks it's been installed. It's a more reliable signal than a fixed replacement date, since actual usage varies household to household.
Why the natural, chemical-free formulation matters here specifically
Because WeeKett composters are frequently used by people actively gardening with the output, a chemical-free filter matters more than it might for a purely waste-reduction appliance — you want confidence that nothing artificial from the filtration process is finding its way into compost destined for edible plants.
Keeping a spare on hand
Since this is a brand-specific filter rather than something available generically at short notice, order a replacement before your current one is fully exhausted rather than waiting for the smell to return and then facing a delivery wait. A filter's working life is easier to plan around than to react to once odour control has already lapsed.
